What is a Coda? And Why We Chose the Name

In musical terms, a coda is the concluding passage of a piece of music. The word comes from the Italian for tail, and a coda sits at the end of a composition, bringing the piece to its close.

But a coda isn't necessarily just where the music stops.

It can revisit ideas that came earlier, give them new meaning, or provide that final moment that makes the whole piece feel complete. In popular music, you might know it more simply as an outro.

And that's where the name started to feel particularly right for us.

Because the music might end. The memory doesn't.

At Coda, we're fascinated by the connection between music and memory.

There are songs we haven't heard for years that can transport us somewhere in seconds.

The song that reminds you of your first holiday with friends. The album you played endlessly as a teenager. The soundtrack to a particular summer. The gig you'll still be talking about decades later.

Sometimes all it takes is the opening few seconds of a song and suddenly you're not just listening to music — you're remembering who you were, where you were and who you were with.

That's what Coda is about.

Our products are designed to give those memories somewhere to live. Whether that's a carefully chosen gift for a music lover, somewhere to keep the little pieces of memorabilia collected along the way, or a journal filled with the songs, albums and gigs that have shaped your life.

The soundtrack doesn't finish when the song does

That's the idea behind our name.

A coda comes at the end of the music, but it can also reflect what came before it. And we liked the thought that the memories attached to music are a little like that too.

The record finishes.

The concert ends.

The lights come up.

But something remains.

A song becomes attached to a person. An album becomes part of a period of your life. A ticket stub becomes something you can't quite bring yourself to throw away.

The music may have finished, but its story hasn't.

And perhaps that's the best way to explain Coda.

We're not really here to sell things about music.

We're here to celebrate what music leaves behind.

Because every life has a soundtrack.

And Coda is for everything that comes after the final note.
